Disability Access Training Sessions

This session will cover a broad overview of the current disability access legislation and disability awareness.

An overview of the key access-related legislation will be provided, including how they have been enacted, who enforces them and responsibilities and obligations of building owners, developers, property managers, certifiers and designers.

The key access-related legislation includes:

  • Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA)
  • Commonwealth Disability (Access to Premises – Buildings) Standards 2010 (Premises Standards)
  • Commonwealth Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (Transport Standards)
  • Building Code of Australia (BCA)
  • Access-related Australian Standards – AS1428.1 (access provisions), AS1428.2 (enhanced access provisions), AS/NZS1428.4.1 (tactile warnings), AS/NZS2890.6 (car parking), AS1735.12 (lifts) and AS4299 (adaptable housing).
  • General tips on how to assist people with a disability
  • Specific strategies in effectively communicating and treating people with various disabilities – mobility, sensory and intellectual
  • Terminology in addressing people with a disability
  • Ways in which you can ensure equity for people with disabilities residing, visiting or working in buildings.
